Letzten Montag eröffnete Dani Marco, Leiter für Innovation und digitale Wirtschaft der katalanischen Regierung, die 7. «European Blockchain Convention» mit 1500 Teilnehmenden, 150 vielfältigen Vortragenden und 40 hochkarätigen Diskussionsrunden. Derzeit macht die digitale Wirtschaft in Katalonien 30 % des Bruttoinlandsprodukts aus und die Regierung investiert in neue Technologien wie 5G, Blockchain und KI (Künstliche Intelligenz), um Fortschritt, Wohlstand und die Zukunft der Arbeit zu ermöglichen. Dani Marco zufolge wird Blockchain eine neue Form der Governance für den digitalen Raum bieten. Eine Blockchain Strategie für Katalonien wurde 2019 verabschiedet und das «Centre Blockchain de Catalunya» ins Leben gerufen.

Die einflussreichste europäische Blockchain Veranstaltung fand am 27. und 28. Juni 2022 in Barcelona statt. Ich habe zum zweiten Mal daran teilgenommen, zum ersten Mal nicht-virtuell. In unserem Merchant Blog veröffentlichen wir in den nächsten Wochen eine Reihe von Artikel mit Transkripten und Audioaufnahmen von der Blockchain Convention.

Seit unserem letzten Newsletter haben wir in unserem Merchant und Developer Blog wieder zahlreiche interessante Artikel veröffentlicht, unter anderem einen Rückblick auf das WordCamp Europe in Porto, an welchem ich mit Anita und Sandro teilgenommen habe. Am 24. Mai fand die von der Zürcher Social Media & Digital-Agentur Kuble organisierte Party «Metaverse» im Zürcher Plaza Klub statt. Das konnte ich mir natürlich nicht entgehen lassen. Expertengespräche mit feinem Finger Food, Getränke an der Bar bis 20 Uhr im 25-Franken-Ticket inklusive, mit der altbekannten und beliebten Twitter Wall, die alles mit dem Hash Tag #KubleParty – R.I.P. #pokeRT! – in den Club beamte, aber nicht mit Fokus Social Media, sondern auf’s Metaverse.

Wird das Metaverse den E-Commerce für immer verändern?

Seitdem die Technologie zum Kauf von Waren über das Internet eingeführt wurde, besteht eine Kluft zwischen der realen und der digitalen Welt.

Beim Kauf von Waren in traditionellen Geschäften haben die Kund:innen die Möglichkeit, die Produkte vor dem Kauf anzufassen oder anzuprobieren. Beim E-Commerce Einkauf entfällt der physische Aspekt des traditionellen Einkaufs in einem Ladengeschäft, aber er bietet einen noch nie dagewesenen Komfort, Schnelligkeit und Zugang.

Das Metaverse ist der Ort, an dem diese beiden bisher getrennten Welten des Handels zusammenkommen, um ein Erlebnis zu schaffen, das den elektronischen Handel für immer neu definieren wird.

Was ist «Quality Content» und wie wird er erstellt?

Das Verfassen hochwertiger Inhalte (Quality Content) sollte ein wichtiger Aspekt jeder SEO (Suchmaschinenoptimierungs-) Strategie sein. Aber wann gilt dein Inhalt als hochwertig? Und bedeutet Qualität für deine Nutzer:innen dasselbe wie für Google & Co.? In diesem Artikel wird erklärt, was qualitativ hochwertige Inhalte sind und wie du sicherstellen kannst, dass deine Inhalte das Ziel erreichen. Dazu sind einige kreative Schreibfähigkeiten erforderlich. Aber keine Sorge, du musst nicht der nächste Martin Suter werden. Wenn du dich auf die richtigen Dinge konzentrierst, kannst du hochrangige Qualitätsinhalte erstellen, die deine Nutzer:innen gerne lesen werden.

Structured Data – Strukturierte Daten

Wer bei den Suchmaschinen «punkten» möchte, muss das Thema Structured Data in die SEO-Strategie mit einbeziehen. Webseitenbetreiber, die diese Massnahme nicht ergreifen, müssen mit Einbussen beim Ranking rechnen.

Structured Data hilft den Suchmaschinen dabei die Inhalte einer Webseite zu erkennen. Es handelt sich dabei um ein standardisiertes Format, mit dem Informationen zu einer Seite angegeben und die Seiteninhalte klassifiziert werden können. Auf einer Blog-Seite können dies beispielsweise Angaben wie Autor, Thema, Kommentare oder Bewertungen sein. Diese Daten werden dann dem Code einer Webseite hinzugefügt.

The Open Web is in Danger #WCEU2022 Part 1

One day 1 of WordCamp Europe, WordPress Core Contributor and WP-CLI maintainer Alain Schlesser, gave a presentation about why the Open web is in danger. He is convinced that the WordPress community needs to do better in making the publishing of free content on the Open Web sustainable. At the end of his great presentation, Caspar Hübinger asked him why the Open Web is so precious.

WordPress and Web3 Trends #WCEU2022 Part 2

In his talk (transcript and audio available) at WordCamp Europe 2022, David Lockie gave a whistle stop tour of the Web3 universe – what is Web3? What are DAOs, NFTs, smart contracts, Layer 2s and DeFi. He then moved on to focus on why they matter to WordPress. What are potential disruptors? Should we be scared or excited? Or both? What are some of the things that will likely be challenging? What might some of the opportunities be? What can WordPress teach the Web3 community in return?

David’s suspicion is that Web3 will disrupt Web2 (and humanity) to its core, helping us to ask good questions about the institutions we’ve built up and what we need going forward. The talk attempts to combine zoomed out, blue sky thinking with some practical advice and guidance as well as introducing a number of ways in which the WordPress community can learn more about Web3 and start to get involved.

QR-Rechnung für WooCommerce

Ab 1. Oktober 2022 verschwinden in der Schweiz die orangen und roten Einzahlungsscheine und werden durch QR-Rechnungen mit QR-Zahlteilen ersetzt. Am 30. Juni 2020 wurde die QR-Rechnung in der Schweiz schrittweise eingeführt. Das Zahlen wird dadurch einfacher, schneller und effizienter.

Die Zürcher Schwarzenbach KMU Services AG ermöglicht mit «QR Modul» Onlineshops das Bezahlen mit QR-Rechnung. Für WooCommerce, ein WordPress Shop Plugin, gibt es bereits eine Extension (Erweiterung bzw. Zusatzmodul), das sehr einfach installiert und konfiguriert werden kann. Wenn du nicht WooCommerce für deine Website nutzt, kann QR-Modul auch mittels REST API (Programmierschnittstellen) integriert werden. Mit dem Plugin kannst du QR-Rechnungen erstellen, die dem Schweizer Standard 100% entsprechen.

Neue Crypto Funktionen bei PayPal

PayPal unterstützt seit ca. einer Woche den nativen Transfer von Kryptowährungen zwischen PayPal und anderen Krypto Wallets und Börsen. Diese Funktion wurde von Nutzer:innen immer wieder als eine der am häufigsten gewünschten Verbesserungen genannt, seit PayPal den Kauf von Kryptowährungen über seine Plattform anbietet. Diese neue Funktion ist für ausgewählte US-Nutzer:innen verfügbar und wird in den kommenden Wochen auf alle berechtigten US-Kund:innen ausgeweitet. Sie ermöglicht PayPal-Kund:innen

• Unterstützte Kryptowährungen zu PayPal transferieren.
• Kryptowährungen von PayPal auf externe Kryptoadressen, einschliesslich Krypto-Börsen und Hardware-Wallets, zu übertragen.
• Kryptowährungen innert Sekunden an Familie und Freunde auf PayPal senden, ohne Gebühren oder Netzwerkkosten für das Senden oder Empfangen.

Einfacher und sicherer Zugang zur Kryptowelt

Die Julius Bär Gruppe, eine Privatbank mit Sitz in Zürich, gab bekannt, dass sie ein proprietäres digitales Vermögensverwaltungssystem entwickelt, das sich auf Bitcoin und andere Kryptowährungen konzentriert und ausschliesslich auf vermögende Kunden zugeschnitten ist. Die Privatbank hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Bitcoin und anderen Kryptowährungen und der Fiat-Welt zu positionieren und gleichzeitig die Volatilität in diesem Bereich zu berücksichtigen. Julius Bär plant, die wachsende Anlageklasse aufmerksam zu verfolgen und ihre Entwicklung sowie sich bietende Chancen zu beobachten.

Mit Kryptowährungen aufs nächste Level

Beim Thuner Payment Provider Payrexx hat sich einiges getan seit wir zuletzt vor gut einem Jahr in diesem Blog darüber berichteten. Im aktuellen Artikel fassen wir die neusten Updates zusammen, sowohl im Bereich Kryptowährungen, als auch generell bei Payrexx.

• Die Prozesse für wiederkehrende Zahlungen wurden komplett überarbeitet.
• Neu werden standardmässig automatische statt manuelle Abos erstellt, ausser Kund:innnen deaktivieren dies.
• Alle veralteten Funktionsaufrufe wurden ersetzt.
• Im Prozess zum Zahlungsmittelwechsel wurden Fehler behoben.
• Um mehrfache Zahlungen pro Bestellung zu vermeiden, ist der Gateway jetzt nur noch 15 Minuten verfügbar.

Mit einem kostenpflichtigen Abo bei Payrexx können die Plugins (Zusatzmodule) für diverse Shop Systeme wie WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaSop, Shopware und weitere ohne zusätzliche Kosten genutzt werden. Payrexx hat im Februar diesen Jahres Version 1.7.0 seines WooCommerce Plugins veröffentlicht, welches aktuell mit einigen Funktionserweiterungen und Fehlerbehebungen in Version 1.7.2 vorliegt.

WordPress 6.0

On May 24 WordPress 6.0 «Arturo» was released with some new features and almost 1000 enhancements. This update focuses on improving the usability of blocks in WordPress and making creation and editing of posts and sites easier than ever.

New Features

Enhanced Writing Experience

New features allow easier editing and creation of posts and sites.

• Select text across multiple blocks for easier copying and pasting.
• Type two open brackets `[[` to quickly access a list of recent posts and pages.
• Keep existing styles when you transform some blocks from one kind to another—from a Paragraph block to a Code block, for instance.
• Create customized buttons and any new buttons you make will retain the style customizations automatically.
• Make tag clouds and social icons even more appealing with updated settings and controls, and a new outline style for the tag cloud.

Style Switching

Block themes include the option to contain multiple style variations. You can change the style of your site within a theme. These block themes includes font-weight, and the style options, like the default color palette.

More Template Choices

WordPress 6.0 includes new template options for block themes: author, date, categories, tag, and taxonomy.

• Featured images can be used in the cover block.
• New featured image sizing controls.
• While editing a template, at the root, or between blocks, the quick inserter shows you patterns and template parts.
• The query block supports filtering on multiple authors, support for custom taxonomies, and support for customizing what is shown when there are no results.

Integrated Patterns

Patterns will now be available in the quick inserter or when creating a new header or footer.

Additional Design Tools

• A new color panel design saves space.
• New border controls offer a simpler way to set your border exactly as you like it. 
• Transparency levels for your colors allow for even more creative color options.
• Control gaps, margins, typography, and more on a collection of blocks, all at once, in the Group block.
• Switch between stack, row, and group variations to position groups of blocks with more layout flexibility.
• The gap support functionality in the Gallery block allows you to create different looks.

Better List View

New keyboard shortcuts to select multiple blocks from the list view, modify them in bulk, and drag and drop them within the list are now available. List View can be opened and closed easily.

Block Locking Controls

Choose to disable the option to move a block, remove a block, or both to simplify project handover, allowing your clients access without worrying about accidentally breaking their site in the process.

Improved Performance and Accessibility

Improving the page and post-load speed, reducing the execution time of various query types, caching, navigation menus as well as more accessibility features were target of this update.

WooCommerce 6.6

WooCommerce 6.6 was released on June 14, 2022. This release should be backwards compatible with the previous version. This release contains:

• 904 commits from 51 contributors in WooCommerce Core
• 97 commits from 21 contributors in WooCommerce Blocks

As always, it is recommended to create a backup of your site and make sure that your theme and any other plugins are compatible before updating. What’s new in 6.6?

• Added a new TikTok Marketing Extension. #32778
• WooCommerce Blocks updated to version 7.6.0.
• Updates to bump the tested WordPress version to 6.0 and the minimum version to 5.8, per WordPress support policy.

These are just some of the changes that are included in WooCommerce 6.6.

WooCommerce 6.6.1

One June 21, 2022 WooCommerce 6.6.1 was made available for download. It introduced a few fixes for issues that were introduced in the 6.6.0 release.

• WooCommerce 6.6.0 introduced sanitization for payment gateway titles. This could cause a problem if you had a payment gateway that didn’t properly set a title. We’ve fixed the issue introduced in 6.6.0 with gateways that don’t set a title.
• We’ve fixed an issue with WooCommerce 6.6.0 with searching for products when WordPress 5.8 was also installed.
• We’ve resolved an issue with Blocks that was causing some product images to not render because the “Product image is visible” option wasn’t being interpreted correctly.

You can download the latest release of WooCommerce from WordPress.org or visit Dashboard → Updates to update the plugin from your WordPress admin screen.

n98-magerun1 v2.3.0

Christian Münch from netz98 released a new version of the Magento 1 and OpenMage CLI (command line interface). This new release provides some smaller optimizations. It contains an update to the config to allow the installation of the latest OpenMage version. 3rd party dependencies have also been updated cautiously, so that old Magento 1 versions should not break.

There are sometimes questions about PHP 8.1 support for Magento 1 / OpenMage. This is currently not being worked on. Main focus is on n98-magerun2 (Magento 2). Christian accepts pull requests if anyone wants to help. Codename of this release is Culver City, the location of the old Magento headquarters.

For the past twenty years, Web 2.0 has enabled a worldwide network of users to connect, collaborate and share content, facilitating international commercial relations. By bringing shared ownership and governance, Web 3.0 facilitates even more connections between people around the world and brings a new type of digital economy where users are empowered. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are one of the major products of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). As the main actors of the crypto economy, these new forms of social organizations are having a growing importance worldwide. However, creating, participating in or contracting with a DAO raises new legal questions that are still to be answered. This lecture explores the following questions:

• What is a DAO from a legal point of view?
• What is at stake in qualifying a DAO as a company?
• What is the law governing a DAO?

Speakers

Florence Guillaume is a Full Professor of civil and private international law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland). Her research and publications cover a wide array of topics, including international corporate law, international business litigation, international intermediated securities law, national and international succession law, international trust disputes, and legal issues of digitalization. She founded in 2020 the LexTech Institute, which is an academic center dedicated to research and training in digital technologies. Before entering academics, Professor Guillaume practiced as a lawyer at the Geneva Bar and the Zurich Bar. She also worked as a Deputy to the Head of the Private International Law Department at the Swiss Federal Ministry of Justice.

Sven Riva is a Ph.D. candidate in private international law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and a member of the LexTech Institute. His thesis deals with the international legal scope of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) with a focus on international corporate law, a field in which he specialized in writing his Master Thesis and as a member of an international group of experts that drafted a Model Law for DAOs. He has a general interest in financial market law, in particular fintech regulation and blockchain law. He has written on the application of the rules of private international law to DAOs as well as in the areas of decentralized justice, digital integrity, artificial intelligence, and international judicial assistance.

If you haven’t submitted your application yet, this is your last chance to get a spot for HackZurich 2022. Applications will close on Sunday, July 10th, at midnight (CEST) — so click the link, get creative, and let us know why you want to be part of it! You can choose and state your preference in the application form to either: 

• participate in-person on-site in Zurich, Switzerland (~500 participants) or
• from all over the world virtually (~650 participants)

Filling out the application will take you less than 5 minutes. You will receive feedback on your application/participation status the week after the deadline. For more details, please check their website. They are looking forward to your application and seeing you at the 9th edition of HackZurich.
