On January 20, 2016 Magento released Community Edition version 2.0.1. This patch release contains several important functional updates, including official support for PHP 7.0.2, which provides dramatic performance improvements, drastically reduces memory consumption, and supports new PHP language features. To learn more about the security enhancements, please visit the release notes.

Only 9 dates later on Janaury 29, 2016 the release of version 2.0.2 followed resolving issues that some users encountered while upgrading from Magento 2.0.0 to Magento 2.0.1 using a compressed archive file (.zip, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2).

The content of this release does not include changes to the code, and the issues might not directly impact your current installation, provided that you installed Magento 2.0.x using either git clone or composer create-project.

However, if you installed Magento 2.0.1 from an archive, you will encounter problems later with future upgrades. For this reason, it is highly recommend that you upgrade your installation to Magento Community Edition, version 2.0.2. For more details please also visit the official release notes.

In case you’re thinking about making your Magento 1 store PHP 7 compatible, have a look at Ivan’s compatibility extension. But if you’re using an older version of Magento 1 it might be better to consider upgrading to Magento 2 right away.
