As announced at last year’s State of the Woo the official WooCommerce market place or extension store now has a Crypto Payments category. By incorporating cryptocurrency as a payment option in your ecommerce store, you can provide more flexibility and potentially reach a wider customer base. Customers will have the choice to pay using digital currencies such as Bitcoin and Ether, with the option of accessing their earnings in either digital or local currency. This could open up new markets, reduce chargeback fees, and offer an alternative payment option for customers.

Back in 2016 we presented 3 WooCommerce plugins by BitPay, Coingate and BitcoinWay. The development of BitcoinWay was discontinued, the other two are still available, so I’d like to include them in the list of options, although they’re not (yet?) listed on the official WooCommerce market place.

Customer Journey

1. The customer is adding items to his or her shopping card and proceeds to checkout. Let’s say the total order amount is $100 USD as an example.
2. The customer selects BitPay as checkout method.
3. A BitPay invoice is generated, the customer selects one of the supported cryptocurrency to complete the payment. The invoice will display an amount to pay in the selected cryptocurrency, at an exchange rate locked for 15 minutes.
4. The customer completes the payment using his cryptocurrency wallet within the 15 min window.
5. Once the transaction is fully confirmed on the blockchain, BitPay notifies the merchant and the corresponding amount is credited to the BitPay merchant account minus our 1% processing fee – thus $99 USD in this example which will be paid out to the merchant’s bank account.

Payrexx

Thun-based payment provider Payrexx (affiliate link) went live with its integration with crypto payment provider Utrust in early March 2021. With Utrust’s payment gateway, Payrexx merchants can seamlessly and securely accept payments in Bitcoin, Ethereum and many other cryptocurrencies.

The partnership with Utrust provides Payrexx users with the ability to accept payments from anywhere in the world using a variety of digital currencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, DASH, Tether, or Utrust’s own token, UTK. Utrust’s service handles all digital settlements in the process. Merchants who accept these payments get paid in their preferred fiat currency (CHF, EUR, etc.) to their bank account.
