On February 24, 2023, OpenAI’s CEO published an article about artificial general intelligence (AGI), i.e. AI systems that are generally smarter than humans. It seems that not only Elon Musk, but also Sam Altman is worrying about the dangers of artificial intelligence. It’s been a wild AI ride this year and we at Openstream are mostly very excited about its new possibilities, but it is also necessary to contemplate the dangers it might pose to humanity.
OpenAI aims to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity, offering new capabilities, amplifying human ingenuity, and providing assistance with various cognitive tasks. However, AGI also brings the risk of misuse, accidents, and societal disruption, making it crucial for society and developers to approach AGI responsibly. OpenAI acknowledges the unpredictable nature of AGI’s development timeline and the varying possible speeds of its takeoff.
Short Term
In the short term, OpenAI focuses on gradually deploying increasingly powerful systems, enabling society to adjust and evolve with AI, and promoting its responsible use. By developing aligned and steerable models, OpenAI aims to strike a balance between societal consensus on AI usage bounds and individual discretion. Lastly, OpenAI seeks to initiate global conversations on governing AI systems, fairly distributing their benefits, and providing equitable access to them.
Long Term
In the long term, OpenAI emphasizes the need for public scrutiny, consultation, and the responsible management of AGI development. The organization envisions a world with accelerated scientific progress, requiring careful coordination among AGI efforts to ensure safety and societal adaptation. OpenAI’s ultimate goal is to contribute to the flourishing of humanity by aligning AGI with the shared values and aspirations of society.
